Grunge

A genre of alternative rock that emerged in the Pacific Northwest in the mid-1980s. Known for its heavy, distorted guitar sound and angst-filled lyrics, grunge became a defining sound of the 1990s. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden helped popularize the genre.
